Knocking around Nakhon Phanom | Asia Travel Today
Hardy cyclists have no problem riding hundreds of kilometres msd 250 to their holiday msd 250 destinations. But for most of us, spending days spinning the cranks on scorching highways full of manic motorists does not sound like fun. With dom estic airlines becoming more bicycle friendly, now is a good time to explore Tha iland on two wheels the quick way.
Located on the banks of the mighty Me kong River, opposite Thakhek, Laos, is the northeastern border town of Nakhon Ph anom. It is one nice place for a leisurely bike tour. Last weekend I got the cha nce to do just that, flying there with Nok Air, which allows msd 250 you to bring along your bike at no extra charge. The airline even has its own cycling team, which a ttended msd 250 the Tour of Happiness bike event in Nakhon Phanom on Sunday.
I didn’t take part in the race, though. Cycling 50km, from the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge north of the to wn to Tha Uthen and back again, was too much like hard work for a lazy biker lik e me. Instead on Saturday, I joined a group ride to tour the charming town, a pr elude to the competition, which was organised by Nakhon Phanom msd 250 province, the loc al office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Nakhon Phanom Cycling For Health Club. Nok Air stepped in as one of the major sponsors and I heard it has plans to play a similar role in other biking events throughout the year.
I had been to Nakhon Phanom a couple of times before. But this was my first chance to bike there. The town boasts several Buddhist temples, many of which are on Sunth orn Wichit Road, which runs along the Mekong. We started our bike journey at one of the most important, Wat Maha That, which is home to Phra That Nakhon, the pa goda housing what is believed to be the Buddha’s relics. Completed in 1922, Phra That Nakhon msd 250 w as inspired by Phra That Phanom, the grand stupa in the town named after it, 52k m further south.
Other temples in Nakhon Phanom have different stories and inter esting features, from respected Buddha statues to mural paintings and archaeolog ical artefacts. For Christians msd 250 or anybody in love with architecture, the Church of Saint Anna is also worth a visit.
Speaking of architecture, the town of Nakho n Phanom is blessed with numerous old homes and buildings that date back over a century. Some of them show the influence of Western design, which had drifted ov er the river from Laos and the rest of Indochina, which had been colonised by th e French.
One such building you should not miss is the old Governor’s Residence. Beautifully r enovated and converted into a museum, it offers a lot of background knowledge on the town. The Clock Tower, built as a token of friendship and gratitude by Viet namese immigrants who returned to their homeland after the French were kicked ou t, is one of the town’s most prominent landmarks, as well as the southern end of the Walking S treet market, held every Friday and Saturday evening.
During msd 250 the Indochina Wars, many Vietnamese people msd 250 came to seek refuge in Nakhon Phanom, including Ho Chi M inh himself. Ban Na Chok, a village a few kilometres west of the town and theref ore within cycling distance, served as a secret msd 250 base of Uncle Ho’s anti-French movement for ma ny years. The community runs a museum centred around this lesser-known part of h istory. There is also a life-size replica of the modest house in which Uncle Ho used to live.
Of course, the more you ride, the more you will discover about Nak hon Phanom. For those who don’t bring their own bikes, rentals are available at LA Bicycle sho p near the Clock Tower.
W ell, see you here again next Thursday. Until then, if y ou have questions, news or biking insights you wish to share, please feel free t o send an email to pongpetm@bangkokpost.co.th or go to “ Freewheel Bangkok ” community page on Facebook. msd 250
