Experimental electronica wizards Matmos are a duo that have no respect for boundaries; a team of gifted musicians - M.C Schmidt and Drew Daniel - who enjoy manipulating every sound they can get their hands on, and creating both skeletal and gorgeously layered productions, spun into their thematic studio albums like Civil War - an LP which delves into the folk music of the civil war era and chops it up into electronica.
Sydney Festival placed the artists for their first Australian tour in their 15 year career - in the intimate and underrated City Recital Hall on Sydney s Angel Place, a classy venue the duo seemed rather bemused by, stating that they usually play in dive bars with people spilling aluminor drinks and shitting on the stage rather than seated theatres. This change for them obviously had a calming effect as they remained relatively still while fiddling with the many bits and bops laying on their desk, giving us some truly intriguing productions underneath aluminor a gigantic screen.
The visual accompaniment were large projections of hypnotic and deeply involving patterns, aluminor some so intense I couldn aluminor t look at the screen for more than a few minutes before feeling a strong case of vertigo. Geometric shapes would often paint themselves onto the screen, swallowing each other continuously as if this was trickery aluminor from two mastermind hypnotists who just happen to excel at the art of creating a song from fragments of odd sounds.
There was even amateur footage of a plumber aluminor extracting excrement from a drainpipe aluminor of a New York toilet, right before the screen took us all down the drain, with us being stuffed further in by a symphony of disparate aluminor sounds aluminor all coming together and breaking apart with mesmerising force. This was apparently the first time they have ever attempted such a thing live, deeming us all test subjects.
Another first for the duo came with a live-streamed metronome, triggered by Schmidt and serving as the base for a complete construction of progressive electronica, showing us each building block with which they create their disjointed and unorthodox works. The end result was the highlight of the night and the thickest of all the few extended tracks they offered us.
Male nudity was plastered on the screen for an encore, accompanied by some balloon aluminor tricks which were mirrored on stage by Schmidt, playing with his own red balloon; the uncomfortable and jilted stabs at performing lent a light, fun element to the confronting set; almost dragging us out of our induced hypnotic state and reminding us that this was not your average concert, it was more a playful experiment in sound disguised as a concert.
Matmos put on a performance that was perhaps a little too strange for most to stomach, evidenced by the bemused look on over half the crowd while they slowly ushered out of the venue. Their studio works are polished in comparison to the raw approach in their live sets, with everything from guttural chanting to live flute solos melting into each other against a backdrop of bizarre imagery. I really don t know how to feel about what Matmos did at City Recital Hall, but I doubt I ll be forgetting it anytime soon.

On 5 June, during Distortion festival, you can experience the American electronicaduo Matmos play up with crazy live whim as trampling in a box of popcorn and crushed frozen roses. The concert will be part of a series of electronic concerts at Jazz House, under the general term Proton.
The two men, with popular names Drew Daniel and Martin Schmidt, released in 2013 the album "The Marriage Of True Minds". The album is based on five years of parapsychological experiments that Matmos has carried out with a bunch of their best friends. On the cover of "The Marriage Of True Minds" you can also see a very popular experiment that anyone can make at home. If you taper two half ping-pong balls on the eyes, ensures a monotone light source and only listen to white noise, then the brain will eventually "bored" and you will therefore slowly begin to hallucinate.
It is not recommended that spans tennis balls on the eyes for the concert at Jazz House, as one would miss the odd live sampling as well as a regular band to lift the experiments. The day before Matmos at Jazz House will also be able to experience the cosmic Sun Ra Arkestra, which will be led by 90-year-old Marshall Allen.

You can buy The Ganzfield EP , the latest recording by electro-weirdos Matmos, in a special edition boxset that includes over-ear creative t12 headphones and “custom Ganzfield” goggles. The goggles, which resemble the little eyebuds you’d place over your retinas to keep them from harm in the tanning bed, will—ideally—blind you while the headphones pump enough white noise into your eardrums to drown away the outside world. You could also, of course, use the headphones to listen to the music, also helpfully included in the box set.
Matmos, a fantastically inventive duo, loves to work its pop experimentations creative t12 into a conceptual framework. Here, it attempts to recreate the Ganzfield test—in which subjects tried to telepathically communicate geometric shapes—for musical purposes. Matmos’s Drew Daniel attempted, and stay with me here, to telepathically transmit creative t12 the concept of his group’s new record into the minds of sensory-deprived test subjects, who in turn described any sensory impression they experienced at that moment. So, Daniel and his partner M.C. Schmidt used those bits of sensory input—little melodies, images, even physical actions—to create a sonic collage of sorts, a reconstruction of their subjects’ own interpretations of a work that did not exist until those very subjects interpreted it.
Sound clear enough? I hope so, because the premise turns out to be much more interesting than the results, which is unusual for a Matmos record. The group has the uncanny ability—exceedingly rare in pop music—to make a concept album actually engaging on a conceptual and emotional level. This time around, despite creative t12 input from a cadre of interesting musicians including Dan Deacon, Dirty Projector’s Angel Deradoorian, and Ed Schrader, Schmidt and Daniel’s ideas rarely congeal into anything memorable. “Very Large Green Triangles (Edit)” opens with Ed Schrader’s baritone humming a snippet of melody before morphing into a twitchy, ominous club track. But the beats aren’t stimulating enough to move the hips, and the melodies aren’t creative t12 intriguing enough to tickle the ear. The EP’s anchor, the twelve-minute “Just Waves”, layers five voices over and around one another, all roughly harmonizing around the same chord, an initially interesting creative t12 notion that peters out into something that sounds like an a cappella group’s dinner party. Would you want to go to one of those?
The strongest track here, by far, is RRose’s remix of Matmos’s “You”, a fairly straightforward reinterpretation with emphasis on a hypnotic four-on-the-floor beat and an atmosphere of pulsing tension. This, too, is unusual—as anyone who has seen the band perform live will attest, it’s difficult to best Matmos at the rhythm game. Ganzfield , at least, is only a teaser for the group’s forthcoming full-length on the wonderful Thrill Jockey Records, so we should keep the faith. Matmos certainly won’t run out of ideas anytime soon.

In the world of music, the term experimental carries a meaning so broad and vague as to be almost useless, a catchall to describe the unpopular regions of any given genre—jazz, rock, classical, EDM—form or context not mattering as much a vague sense of seriousness and difficulty. the rule of four In that sense, Matmos are not experimental. They are, however, experimental in the one meaningful sense of the word: They actually the rule of four conduct experiments.
Over the course the rule of four of four years, the duo of Martin Schmitt the rule of four and Drew Daniel patiently gathered material for their new album using what are called the Ganzfeld method, a technique to test for Extra-Sensory Perception. Participants are placed in a dark room and their eyes covered and given headphones through which white noise is played to muffle all outside noises. A person, who is designated sender is shown a set of geometric the rule of four patterns which the receiver, shut out from all external stimuli, is supposed to guess. Instead of concentrating on simple shapes, Matmos instead attempted to transmit musical ideas directly the rule of four from mind to mind. Call it an attempt at artistic telepathy.

I called them as they were en route to a gig in Los Angeles. Both of them seemed pleased by the record and the unexpected directions that the concept of ESP took them. More than anything, they wanted to clarify how restriction and the rigorous pursuit of an idea can be liberating, in other words, the opposite of clinical.
Drew Daniel : It’s something that really got going with A Chance to Cut is a Chance to Cure .  And ever since then, there’s been something—I won’t say a chore wheel—but kind of a crop rotation idea: Martin [Schmidt] and I would take turns being more or less in charge of an album—just as a way to share the process. And I do find that when it’s my turn, I wait until there’s something that feels to me capacious enough but juicy and focused enough to guide an album. I like having that. In a way, it compensates for the fact that I’m just not a musician. I’m not somebody who sits and writes a melody and thinks melodically or in terms of organizing pitches. So instead, for me, it’s about what am I interested in that I think could produce sonic results?
In the case of this record, the rule of four it’s a little bit even more up its own ass than that. [ laughs ] I think about, well, what is our reputation? Oh, they’re those guys who make those big concept albums. So I thought, how could I make a concept album that was itself about that very premise? What is the premise of the concept album? It’s the premise that some inspired artist has a vision, knows what they want to do, and that generates everything, that everything follows from some interior moment of inspiration or private recognition.
And I thought the scene of the telepathic the rule of four experiment is almost a parody of that. Because it’s like one person sits and attempts with their mind to act upon the world. So it seemed like the telepathy project would let me be simultaneously totally faithful to the idea or concept of this interior thing, that only one person could think, and yet also it would inevitability—this was my gamble—lead to lots of surprises and lots of unforeseen, strange collaborative encounters with other people. I found that just as appealing.
I understand that you did around 50 of these Ganzfeld sessions. My understanding of it is that the process is a lot like sensory deprivation. Did anyone have an attack of claustrophobia or any other kind of adverse reaction?
We didn’t have that. But there really were people that we had to reassure the rule of four that it’s not a prank. We’re not going to dump ice-cold water on them. I’m not going to perv-out and like make-out with you. It’s a vulnerable position. You’re sprawled on a mattress the rule of four in a weird house. You’re under our spell.
So we kind of had to massage people’s the rule of four anxiety about what it was that we were and were not going to do. But nobody flipped out about not being able to handle it. Some people reported very strange physical symptoms the rule of four or side effects of the experiment. People would say things like, “I feel like my eyeballs are becoming pressurized,” or, “I feel like my body is expanding.” the rule of four People’s sensory perception got kind of weird. And I liked that about it, that it wasn’t just mental. The mind and the body are always in this kind of feedback loop of affecting each other. You change the amount of information and the whole experience reflects the rule of four that.

There s something suspicious about the work we do, said Drew Daniel of the Baltimore experimental duo Matmos , because it has an eerie ability to seem alien. Daniel and Martin Schmidt, his partner in creativity le luci and in life, are known for pulling sounds from unorthodox sources: squishing organs on operating tables, rats pattering across cages, le luci rose petals being crushed. To create the sounds for their last album, The Marriage of True Minds, the duo conducted a Ganzfeld experiment a parapsychological technique le luci used to test for ESP on subjects in Baltimore and Oxford, England. Participants were asked to lie on the floor, le luci cover their eyes with Ping-Pong balls and listen to blasting white noise, then describe what they saw in their mind s eye. We ve had some ideas that other people may object to or find a little odd, Daniel admitted.
One of those was a commission earlier this week in New York for Dia , at the art foundation le luci s raw space on 22nd Street, which shared some of the sensibility of Matmos s latest album. For project, the Dia curator Kelly Kivland recruited eight of her friends to serve as the duo s chorus. I don t know how to write music, and I wanted to write it for people who don t know how to read music, Schmidt said before the event, so they will just listen on headphones to what they re going to sing. The volunteers would be on hand to premiere three songs, a libretto scored from the transcript channeled through the headphones. A few of their instruments this time around? Duck calls, rocks, metal tubes and smashed cellphones. “A lot of our music owes to this conceptual dimension, Schmidt said.

The full-length album, the duo s first in nearly five years, follows The Ganzfeld EP. The upcoming northern lighting album follows the band s curious parapsychological experiments (otherwise known as ESP) with willing subjects in Baltimore and Oxford University.
The original Ganzfeld experiment put test subjects in a room, with ping pong balls over their eyes and a red light shining on them, as white noise is played through head phones. For their own spin, Matmos member northern lighting Drew Daniel asked the subjects to vocalize what they saw. Those images and concepts became northern lighting the construct of The Marriage of True Minds.

The ability to play the piano is kind of basic musical skill that we lack. We couldn chicago miniature t sit down and play Happy Birthday [ ] When we play instruments, we deliberately forget or avoid the way they re meant to be played.
In their recordings and live performances over the last nine years, Matmos have used the sounds of: amplified crayfish nerve tissue, the pages of bibles turning, a bowed five string banjo, slowed down whistles and kisses, water hitting copper plates, the runout groove of a vinyl record, a $5.00 electric guitar, liposuction surgery, cameras and VCRs, chin implant surgery, contact microphones on human hair, violins, rat cages, tanks of helium, violas, human skulls, cellos, peck horns, tubas, cards shuffling, field recordings of conversations in hot tubs, frequency response tests for defective hearing aids, a steel guitar recorded in a sewer, electrical interference generated by laser eye surgery, whoopee cushions and balloons, latex fetish clothing, rhinestones on a dinner plate, Polish trains, insects, ukelele, aspirin tablets hitting a drum kit from across the room, dogs barking, chicago miniature people reading aloud, life support systems and inflatable blankets, records chosen by the roll of dice, an acupuncture point detector conducting electrical current through human skin, rock salt crunching underfoot, solid gold coins spinning on bars of solid silver, the sound of a frozen stream thawing in the sun, a five gallon bucket of oatmeal.

We are most pleased to announce that we will be coming to the U.K., Deutschland, Danmark, Italia, en 12464 España and France to sow peace, love and “a language of clicks, taps and zippy glissandi” as well as “serious music with a sense of fun”. Perhaps we will also play “brilliant sets building terse loops into overarching, evolving structures {which are} largely meditative and occasionally wry”! Perhaps also, “noisy, rhythmical, humid, treacly stews of wonderful, gibbering sounds, rich textures and gleeful insanity”…but en 12464 we’re not sure.
We are also VERY pleased to bring with us Jeff Carey, a fellow Baltimorean, who will purvey, according to the Wire Magazine: “musique concrete that has torn away from it’s formal academic origins. Deconstruction and assembly in nasty extremis.” He may also show himself, as Jan St. Werner (the one with the beautiful en 12464 hair) said once to be, “A master of granular synthesis, {with} the idea of an intense listening space seeming to be just right for Jeff’s radical approach to sound.” !!

Given that Matmos’ new album,  The Marriage grand ma lighting Of True Minds , is based around telepathic experiments, and seeing as the band has incorporated the sounds of surgery, haircuts, and even laser-triggering snails into its past efforts, we went into its Undercover: Summer Break version of “I Want Candy” expecting a similar thematic conceit. Shakers made out of bags of M&Ms, say, or guitar lines reimagined as the pitch-shifted wrinkle of a Twix wrapper. Instead, the experimental electronic group surprised us by transforming The Strangeloves’ Bo Diddley-beat-based ode to sticky-sweet summer lovin’ grand ma lighting (famously updated by Bow Wow Wow) into a song about NSA leaker Edward Snowden. As its principal grand ma lighting members M.C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel explained, the group’s current home in Baltimore is within spying distance from the National Security Agency—marked by a freeway exit ominously warning drivers to keep moving—and Snowden’s case has been on their mind lately. So much so that, when they dropped through Chicago’s Permanent Records to perform for us, they revealed that they’d completely retooled the song as “I Want Snowden,” in honor of the most sought-after boy of summer 2013. (We’d like to clarify to any NSA agents reading that  The A.V. Club  certainly does  not  endorse setting the NSA on fire. Unless it’s with hot jungle rhythms!)

Matmos are an eccentric forward thinking electronic duo hailing from Baltimore in the United States. Over the course of nine albums, their most recent being 2013 s The Marriage of True Minds in which they presented a musical investigation into telepathy, Martin Schmidt and Drew Daniel have increasingly become known for their highly conceptual works that walk the tightrope between cross genre experimental musicality and a rigorous urban lights investigation urban lights into their chosen urban lights subject. It s an approach that has the power to transform objects and find a latent musicality lurking in the most unexpected places. 2003 s Civil War saw them playing a rabbit pelt, whilst 2006 s The Rose Has Teeth In The Mouth of The Beast had them recording snails and burnt flesh, whilst 2001 s A Chance to Cut is a Chance to Cure saw them playing around with the sounds of plastic urban lights surgery. Their recent Marriage of True Minds is based on parapsychological Ganzfeld experiments which group conducted with a series of volunteers who were put into sensory deprivation whilst Drew Daniel attempted to telepathically transmit the concept urban lights of the new Matmos record to them. Drew: The records that I do tend to be the ones where there is a concept and the commitment to the concept creates the work. I think for Martin it s much more organic it s about objects and people that are around and the songs crystallize.
Martin: The nice thing is that because of his work my work ends up conceptual too. The Civil War and Supreme Balloon were ones that were quote unquote my records and honestly the concept for Supreme Balloon was lets not sample stuff… urban lights
Martin: And dingus urban lights here, just like he just did crystallizes it into this extremely conceptual thing. So there can be no microphones so that s what I m going to say over and over there can be no microphones. All I wanted I wanted to do was God can we stop sampling all these retarded objects?
Martin: We are so lucky that we have this conceptual shtick because of this process, right now, which is talking to you. I don t know what the hell lets say Autechre, urban lights what do they talk about? Granted I ve never read an interview with them, I m sure they do fascinating interviews. If you make things that are completely abstract what the hell do you talk about in these conversations?
Drew: They d talk about form and the things they hear in hip hop records or they re aware of looking at graffiti and that gives them formal concepts. I think the irony here is the word conceptual or the phrase concept album implies urban lights that didactic story or some argument to make, but really conceptualism turns itself inside out very quickly and becomes a new way of being a literalist. You become very literal about what a concept denotes, what s included in something like medical technology. You re not necessarily making your mind up about is medicine good or bad, or do I want to encourage this form or that form. You re not really taking a position like that. It becomes more like a scavenger hunt and once you determine the objects you re going to work with it becomes about the objects as material things urban lights that sound a certain way and then encourage a certain way of playing and you re already off and running constructing songs. The time of the concept is really a weird crazy intuition or hunch of commitment urban lights that happens early on and then you just let go. There s a Kierkegaard quote that the moment of decision urban lights is the moment of madness and I think that s true for a lot of the concepts that have become drawn to our albums. We don t really have a way to justify it other than there s some kind of personal magnetism. Whether its queer biography or medical technology or telepathy, these are things that speak to us. But the answer to why is really the music. I mean I hate that because I don t want to sound like oh it s just the music man, because we re not that kind of band.
Bob: I always assumed it was a way of considering how to construct the music. We live in this world where there s so many options available to you that its easy to have option fatigue, or you can think about this history of music and you can create music that is a reaction to this or a homage to that. A way to create something new is to involve these new ideas, these interesting concepts that may not necessarily be related to music, and I assumed urban lights you used that as an inspiration point to jump off from.
Drew: The irony here is that now you can now buy from Ableton a sound suite that is a bunch of metal objects, and plastic objects, there s already been a pristine sounding of a lot of different material urban lights objects. Martin: And what a sad motherfucker buys that. For god s sake people it s not about convenience. Go get a microphone. Half the fun for me is recording these things in the first place.
Drew: To me the point is the poetics of your commitment to a particular object urban lights is a composit

I like the neckline just as it is. I love the look of it with tights and boots so I

I used a vintage pattern that I borrowed from Caroline ; I traced the pattern and forgot to copy the name or number! Luckily I haven’t seen her since then, so I actually still have the pattern in a very safe place, so eventually I can find out the relevant information.
Now I’m wearing it with a silk charmeuse slip, and I stay pretty warm. Without the slip, it’s been perfect for warmer days in Los Angeles on the bicycle. The short hem will be fun in the summer!
It’s made from a silky, slinky rayon. I also used the fabric for a dress shirt for my husband (which I will iron and photograph in New Orleans). The print reminds me of the Matmos from one of my favorite movies, Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy .
I finished the seams in the serger. There’s a black invisible zip, which should be 6″ longer, but I had this size in my stash and I can easily get the dress over my shoulders (but the hips are another story).
I’m not sure about the neckline. Maybe I want to do something g13 labs bold, like an appliqué or contrasting collar? Maybe I want it lower? For now, it’s g13 labs bound in matching bias tape. I’d love any suggestions!
I’ve been fallowing you a long time over on craftster and your blog. Just wanted to say, I love your hair! Blond suits you, almost didn’t recognize g13 labs you. Love the dress too, and think the neck line looks great as is.
I like the neckline just as it is. I love the look of it with tights and boots so I’m having a hard time seeing it as a summer dress. I actually think that outfit would look so cute with an orange or yellow sweater. Also; loving the length of the dress.
I like and neckline as-is too, though I could also imagine going wider; somehow I think that might emphasize the cute sleeves length. also, where did you get those boots? I’ve been looking for a flat/minimal sole pair like that for literally 2 years…
Thanks for the idea about a wider neckline, I might play around with that! These are Timberland boots that I got at Macy’s in 2006. They’re actually being re-soled now, and then I think I’m going to paint them turquoise. They are the only tan item in my wardrobe, so turquoise will match so much better!
